  1. Is it safe?<\/strong> Most importantly, the community and home should be safe and sanitary and able to meet your loved one\u2019s needs now and in the future. The community should offer a variety of living choices to meet healthcare needs. That way the resident can remain at that community if additional nursing service is needed. \u00a0For additional safety, are emergency call switches or personal emergency bracelets or necklaces provided? Assistance with medication and other needs should be available, too.<\/li>\n

What options are available?<\/strong> If your loved one is still able to maintain a level of independence, make sure they are able to come and go as they please.\u00a0 Determine if the community has attached garages for easy access to their car. Make sure the home is maintenance-free with a variety of floor plan options that may include one or two-bedrooms. Also, living is more comfortable with sunrooms, dens, laundry rooms and full kitchens.\u00a0 Does the facility offer laundry service and meals? You should ask about social activities and scheduled transportation to shopping, restaurants and appointments.<\/li>\n

Is the staff friendly and caring?<\/strong> Observe the communication between the staff and the elders.\u00a0 Do they call the seniors by their first name and engage in conversation?\u00a0 Are they polite when addressing the seniors and seem happy to be interacting with them? Also, make sure the staff is prompt when handling needs the seniors have. All care should be personalized, making the seniors feel safe and comfortable.<\/li>\n

Where is the retirement home located?<\/strong> It\u2019s a good idea to be located close to your loved one\u2019s new home.\u00a0 This way, you can check up on the senior as often as you\u2019d like. Plus, knowing their loved ones are nearby might make the transition for the senior a bit easier, too.<\/li>\n
  5. What are the costs?\u00a0 <\/strong>Know the entry fees and whether a long-term commitment is required. Ask what services are included with the costs, such as activities, transportation, and other services.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
